Step into Health- London and the South East
The leading host organisation for this region is Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. This is one of the largest teaching hospitals in the country, employing around 13,500 staff and having over 2 million patient contacts per year.
Over its 900-year history as a hospital, it has a long standing connection with the military. As an organisation is has a contract with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to procure and manage Hospital Care provision for the population of British Forces Germany (BFG) totalling 55,000 service personnel, civilians and their immediate families.
Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust is working in partnership with 9 other NHS organisations in London and the South East to hold information days for service leavers and veterans, host work placements and offer mentoring in order to support and enable employment in the NHS.
For information about the participating NHS organisations in London and the South East there will be face to face information days held throughout the year. These will provide the opportunity to find out more about the NHS organisation, the work experience possibilities and job vacancies which may be of interest. It will also enable networking with fellow service leavers, NHS employees and employers. Whilst these are hosted in different locations throughout the year, all of the organisations taking part in this programme will be represented at each event and therefore service leavers and veterans have the option to attend any event which is most convenient to them.
Attending an NHS event will provide:
- An understanding of the wide range of jobs available in the NHS
- Advice on demonstrating how military skills and experience transfer to NHS jobs
- Information on and applications for work experience placements within an NHS organisation
- Information about recruitment processes in the NHS
- Introductions to ex-service personnel working in NHS organisations who have the experience of making a successful transition from military to civilian employment
- An opportunity to benefit from fast track recruitment at some participating organisations

Step into Health London and the South East is working in partnership with Project Fortis, who has designed an IT platform to match transitioning service personnel and veterans with NHS mentors through a sensitive and highly successful algorithm. This system is used by BT and the Barclays VETS consortium, with mentors from blue chips including Jaguar Land Rover; BAE Systems; G4S; Laing O’Rourke; Deloitte; ISS and PwC. Veterans have been well supported and often employed as a result of this mentoring. Step into Health London and the South East will use this Project Fortis platform to create mentor relationships between NHS employees and veterans/service leavers, providing employment skills and enabling individual work placements where appropriate.
